Artist's Visual Concept:
This year's project revolves around the the all important Kalo (taro) plant in the Hawaiian culture. The school has adopted this plant and has used the letters of the word to exemplify cherished Hawaiian virtues. We have taken the students to sketch the school's lo'i on several occcasions; they did long and quick sketches as well as contour drawings, perspective, and observing the specific changes in the shapes of the different varieties of kalo. The next step was to "build" the plant by cutting out the leaf shapes in a multitude of sizes out of green cloth. Each plant has two leafs and a keiki shoot: each leaf is made of two cloth leaf shapes that are glued/hot glued to a wire stem that has been wrapped with floral tape. The three stems( two leaves and keiki) are twisted together to form one plant. The Sintra 3/4" panel has a drilled hole to which the plant is hot/glued in place.........simple!#!!!!! Our 2003 project will be installed in May 2005 . So much for volunteer art projects and big ideas. |
