The corner of Beretania and Piikoi has always been a high profile corner/ intersection: motorist use Beretania is the main east-flowing artery to downtown and from Ala Moana Shopping Center, Piikoi is on the main thoroughfare to jump on the H-1 freeway going East or West bound. The local neighborhood mom and pops "Piikoi Food Center" has given way to a variety of business such as Church's Chicken to a variety of car sales lots.
In contrast, on the makai/daimond side of Beretania, The Garden House has retained the same status quo for many a decade catering to the local green thumb enthusiast. It recently has turned into a mattress store. Small kid time, on the weekends, my cousin "T" and I, would ride our goose-neck bikes down from Punchbowl to Scotties on Keeaumoku where we could buy 5 meat/lettuce and cheese tacos (with hot sauce) for a dollar . We'd quickly eat a couple there and head home making sure we stop by the Piikoi store for a creamsicle to cool our burning mouths. Once in our back yard, we'd eat the rest...with a cool running waterhose nearby. 8 |
