On one of those remote fishing soljourns to the Big Island, my friends took me on a torturous 11 mile hike with full pack and fishing gear: down and up Waipo valley, across numerous switch-backs and streams, through forests and down the steep, narrow valley wall of Waimanu.

From the shoreline to mountains is a protected water shed and remains one the most pristine places in Hawai'i. The fishing was great, though during that first camp, we were soaked to the bones due to wet weather.

Our subsequent trips have always been eventful and living off the land and constantly adjusting your steps to that of nature, for me, is a welcomed contrast to our usual fast paced/high tech life. Waimanu is truely a magical valley.
